How Does Botox Treat Wrinkles?
Botox targets dynamic wrinkles produced by facial muscles every time you smile, laugh, or frown. The more emotion you show the deeper these wrinkles and lines are likely to be. Left untreated these lines may become permanent and that point are very difficult to treat.
When used in the upper face, Botox reduces frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines, and provide a brow lift without surgery. In the hands of expert injectors, Botox can be used in the lower face to reduce perioral wrinkles, gummy smiles, dimpling of the chin, and the appearance of a square jaw (masseter hypertrophy).
Botox can improve or eliminate:
- Worry lines
- Frown lines
- Laugh lines
- Crow’s feet
How Do Botox Injections Work?
Botox injections block impulses from the nerve to the facial muscles that are related to specific expression lines, causing the muscles to relax and blocking their contraction. Small amounts of Botox are injected into certain muscles of facial expression. As the Botox is taken up into nerve endings it exerts its effect and muscle activity diminishes or ceases, leading to decreased action in these muscles and a smoother, refreshed, and younger look emerges.
How Long Does Botox Last?
The Botox molecules are slowly broken down by our body’s own enzymes and affected muscles gradually regain function, allowing them to contract. While the breakdown rate is variable and dependent on individual physiology, the effects of Botox injections generally last between 3-4 months. With regularly scheduled repeat treatments over time, the targeted muscles will weaken due to inactivity, and many patients find that they can reduce the frequency of injections.
Is Botox Safe?
Millions of Botox injections are performed around the world every year. In the hands of well trained, experienced injectors, the cosmetic use of Botox has shown no signs of short-term or long-term negative effects.
Choosing a Botox Injector
Experience Matters! As the popularity of Botox has grown, so has the discrepancy between experienced physicians and their staff, and unsupervised ‘injectors’ whose entire training consisted of a weekend course in Botox injection. No face is the same, there is no substitute for an extensive understanding of facial anatomy to ensure consistent, natural, and long-lasting results for every patient.
